Smith-Welch Memorial Library is housed in an historic building on the main East-West thoroughfare in downtown Hearne,Texas. The building was constructed in 1892 and used as a retail location for various business enterprises until 1966.
Mrs. Josie Smith Welch deeded the property to the City of Hearne in March of 1970 for use as a public library. Smith-Welch Memorial Library, named in honor of the Smith and Welch families, opened in 1974.
The building, one of only two in Robertson County, Texas, has a suspended ceiling and boasts a beautiful stained glass window. Unfortunately, the second floor of the building can only be used for storage as it was never renovated and had fallen into disrepair.
